Monitor & Television Aspect Ratio Reference

Most standard computer monitors and televisions sets have an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 1.33:1 for their viewable area that is displayed. The aspect ratio is calculated by dividing the viewable width by height.

Standard displays:

  • 640×480 resolution: 640/480 = 1.33

  • 800×600 resolution: 640/480 = 1.33

  • 1024×768 resolution: 640/480 = 1.33

  • 1280×960 resolution: 1280/960 = 1.33

Widescreen displays:

  • 1280×720 resolution: 1280/720 = 1.77
  • 1280×768 resolution: 1280/768 = 1.66
